Chapter Eleven

Morgan let out a tired breath as she watched the last shifter disappear into the woods. She wanted nothing more than to go inside and take a good long nap, but she still had Jackson to deal with.

Tréan walked up behind her and started massaging her shoulders. “Why don’t you let Jackson sleep a little longer and we can go down to the lake for a swim?”

Leaning back against his chest, she closed her eyes and smiled. “That does sound good, but I don’t think I would enjoy myself because all I’ll be thinking about is how he was acting.” With one last sigh, she stepped out of his embrace and started walking toward the house.

Tréan watched her as she opened the back door and walked into the house.

“She’s pushing herself too hard too soon. You have to persuade her to slow down.”

Looking over his shoulder, he waited for Geoffrey to materialize. “She’s not going to slow down until this is finished. Did you not see how she was with those kids? She was out here for hours making sure each and every one of them would have no memory of the horrors they’ve been through.”

Looking down at May, holding onto Geoffrey’s hand, he gave her a reassuring smile. “You have nothing to worry about, petit, she hasn’t forgotten about you.”

Looking toward the house, May was silent for a moment before stepping closer to Tréan. “I know she hasn’t forgotten about me, but she has forgotten about herself. I can feel her energy slowly draining out of her and once she’s helpless, my momma is going to attack her.”

Tréan was shocked by the child’s words. “How do know what Marie has planned?”

“I am bound to her, remember. I can hear her thoughts and she can hear mine unless I’m with Geoffrey.” The look she gave Geoffrey was one of pure love.

Squeezing her hand, Geoffrey looked back at Tréan and his eyes grew serious. “Morgan needs to relax, and she needs food. Take her for a run and make her hunt. She won’t hunt properly if she’s thinking about it, so you have to make her angry like you did when she killed that deer. Once she’s eaten, I believe she will be able to get the rest she needs.”

“How can you be sure that will work?”

“Because the only time she’s ever knowingly shifted, was when she was trying to protect you or when she was angry with you. When she was shifting before, did she ever kill for food?”

“Yeah, sure, every now and then she’d kill a rabbit.”

“Yes, but did she eat it?”

Tréan thought back to the few times that Morgan had actually killed anything during their nights spent running. “No… she never once ate any of those rabbits. She’d kill them and then bring them to me to eat.”

“Exactly. I believe those times she shifted while asleep, she thought she was dreaming, and she wouldn’t allow herself to eat them. I’m surprised she even killed them in the first place.
